CETL Workshop for Students Series 1: Avoiding Plagiarism using “Turnitin”

Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's original work. But Sometimes students can avoid plagiarism by using some techniques. Green University Center of Excellence for Teaching and Learning (CETL) takes an initiative to train students on avoiding plagiarism titled “ How to avoid Plagiarism using Turnitin”. The Program was held on Monday, 18 April 2021, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm using the zoom platform. The facilitator of the program is Dr. A.S.M Shihavudddin, director of CETL.To attend the session participants had to register themselves through Google Form provided by CETL of the Green University of Bangladesh. More than 300 people responded to it. But only the first 100 registered students got the chance to attend the session. The goal of the session was to educate students on how to avoid Plagiarism using Turnitin. Key events of the Program are; 1. What is Plagiarism 2. How should we avoid Plagiarism 3. Using the tool Turnitin.


At the beginning of the session, Dr. ASM Shihavuddin shared insightful thoughts on Plagiarism and asked participants for their opinion about plagiarism. It was an interactive and hands-on practice session for the participants. The session was focused on the mentioned key events while intersecting with more than 100 participants. Then Dr. ASM. Shihavuddin showcased the process of using Turnitin and demonstrated to them how to create an account in Turnitin and modified some settings of it. Then showed adding a file to it. Then the resource person showed the ways to modify the sentences and made them plagiarism-free.


Finally, Dr. ASM. Shihavuddin shared some general thoughts and in reply to some participants’ questions and discussed them very competently. Then Dr. ASM Shihavuddin sir, Hasan Al Zubair Rony sir, and other trainers gave thanks to the interns of (CETL) to highlight the need for this initiative. Lastly, the session was ended by thanking the participants.
